Worldwide Learning Services -- Technical Writing a

it is a distant memory

Worldwide Learning Services in Plantation was extremely dysfunctional. There were constant layoffs and human resource mistakes. The management protected itself and was very retaliatory toward employees who spoke up. One manager from Chicago would have teleconferences that were hours long where the managers would give powerpoint presentations about themselves and their families. He thought that this would create teambuilding. What it affirmed for people what that management was a bunch of self engratiating buffons who did not know how to build employee confidence.... They had 15 major layoffs in 18 years...

Always Possitive

A lot of people with a lot of experience. Majority of people are warm and caring. Very professional organization with a "family" like environment.

Management is always saying things are "getting better". Honesty is not a strength at Motorola. Quality is not a good as Six Sigma program would lead everyone to believe, it is more of a PR tool than a quality tool.

Just another big company

Great benefits from a progressive company (benefits extended to same sex partners AFAIK). Good pay, for the area I live in, and my hours aren't insane. Telecommuting is popular and encouraged, especially in Schaumburg.

It's a big company, with the usual big company problems. Sagging profits lead to layoffs to boost the bottom line. R&D takes a back seat to anything to make money NOW. Working with other groups can be a challenge and slow. None of this strikes me as out of the ordinary for any other Fortune 100 company.

only favorites do well here

You must be a favorite to get ahead. There is a program "BLDP". If you get in it, you get a promotion when you graduate, and another in 2 years. Its great for VPs and senior managers to let their pets "demonstrate leadership".

You can't get promoted as a design engineer, you need to go into the supply chain for that.

I wont be here much longer.

The job is often comfortable and the Work-Life balance is preserving.

The recognition is not good and there is a lot of politics in this organisation.

Senior Software Engineer

there are many levels of sr. software engineer. a person with 10-15 yrs experience and 1-2 yrs experience may both be sr. software eng on level E08.
it's the level that matters for getting better salary. If you have good experience, say 5+ yrs, do not take the job if they offer you any level below E10.
Forget about career development. Most mgrs, team leads have hardware or some diff experience like RF, etc. You may have to struggle for several years to get promoted. This place isn't good for software engineers.

Work-Life balance is good when compared to other companies.

Too much bureaucracy, turf wars.
It doesn't matter how good a product is, its sales are solely dependent on its marketing efforts. Motorola doesn't do a good job of marketing its products.

The Entire Senior management is focused only on the mobile devices division. In spite of that that division isn't doing well. That should tell you how "efficient " the management is :-)

Short term thinking

I'm astonished time and again by the short term thinking that managers in this company demonstrate.
Investment in the R&D division is exceptionally low relatively to other companies. It seems as if Motorola is eager about short term profits that apply a major risk for the longer term R&D developments.
