As a self-proclaimed 'Druckerite,' John Gutowski -- former manager of DaimlerChrysler, North America and current President of the Fairwater Group -- is more against yearly appraisals than for them. If he were to subscribe to a performance management system, two key components would be required:
1. It must be ongoing
2. It must match the strategy of the corporation (which continually changes)
He believes that a performance management system is how you find talent, but annual reviews bog down the system because managers worry about how they will get their work done while sitting down one-on-one with far too many people. Plus, corporate strategy is continually changing therefore individual goals established earlier in the year will also change.
Alternately, if you are managing performance, it is important to do so in the context of the job because performance is fluid. Providing feedback 9 months after a job is completed does not help the employee improve their performance. By addressing projects as they progress, the managers set expectations for that project at the beginning,...
